I tried Jessica Sprague's Shazam tutorial for editing photos. I didn't do the burn edge part because I couldn't figure out how to do it (yet). The first one is before and the second one is the Shazamed (is that a word) techinique. Now to figure out how to get rid of the big shadow.

Great job!! Especially for your first time. To get rid of the shadow on his shirt you can use the clone tool. Also you may want to do another layer and mask off the shirt...looks better and not blown in the first.

Awesome! Your before and afters are just great. :)
There's a dodge and burn tool in photoshop.... I don't know if elements has it, but it would be easier to burn the brighter side of his shirt to make it darker. (the clone tool would take forever and not be smooth.)
